What actually happens in a Fertility Acupuncture session?

What should you expect?

If you've never had acupuncture before, it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how relaxing the experience is.

Your first appointment is all about getting to know you and understanding your fertility journey. We'll talk about your menstrual cycle, your health history, any fertility investigations you've had, medications or supplements you're taking, and whether you're trying to conceive naturally or with the support of IVF or another fertility treatment.

If you've been tracking your Basal Body Temperature (BBT), ovulation, or using fertility apps, we'll go through those together. The more information we have, the better we can understand your individual cycle and tailor your care.

A Treatment Designed Just for You

No two fertility journeys are the same, so no two treatments are exactly the same either.

During your acupuncture session, I'll select points based on your Chinese medicine assessment, your current stage of your menstrual cycle, and how you're feeling on the day.

I use Dr. Tan's Balance Method, a style of acupuncture developed by the late Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan. This approach uses a system of balancing different areas of the body rather than simply placing needles where symptoms occur.

One of the things you will notice is that I don't always place needles near the abdomen. Instead, treatment may involve points on the head, arms, legs, hands, or feet.

The Balance Method is known for being gentle, comfortable, and highly individualised. Every treatment is tailored to the person sitting in front of me rather than following a standard protocol.

What Does It Feel Like?

The needles used are extremely fine

You might feel a small pinch as a needle is inserted, followed by sensations such as warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a dull ache. These sensations are completely normal and usually settle quickly.

Many people find the treatment deeply relaxing. Some even fall asleep.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

After your consultation, the acupuncture treatment usually lasts around 20–30 minutes while you rest comfortably.

Many patients enjoy this time as an opportunity to slow down, switch off from the outside world, and simply relax.

Working Alongside Your Fertility Team

If you're working with a GP, fertility specialist, or IVF clinic, acupuncture can be incorporated alongside your existing care. I encourage patients to continue recommended medical investigations and treatments while we use Chinese medicine as part of a collaborative approach.
