Does Acupuncture for Fertility actually work?
I will answer this I promise x
A Different Way of Looking at Fertility
One of the things I love about Chinese medicine is that we don't just focus on a diagnosis we focus on you.
Whether you're trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IVF, or simply wondering why things aren't happening as expected, we'll take the time to understand your body, your cycle, and your overall health.
Fertility is rarely influenced by just one thing, so we look at the bigger picture.
Gathering data is very important, so we look at few menstrual cycles. This helps us spot patterns, and understand how your body is working.
Looking Beyond the Calendar
Acupuncture is just the beginning of the story and quite a small part. When you come in and see someone like me, we won’t just stick pins in you walk away and hope for the best.
We gather all the info we need and work from a place of knowledge, no guess work.
Your menstrual cycle tells us a lot.
We'll chat about things like your cycle length, period flow, pain, spotting, cervical mucus, ovulation, energy levels, sleep, digestion, stress, and any other symptoms you've noticed. Every little piece helps build the puzzle.
If you're tracking your Basal Body Temperature (BBT), we'll go through your charts together. BBT charting can provide useful insights into ovulation, the different phases of your cycle, and whether there are patterns worth exploring further.
If you're using ovulation predictor kits, fertility monitors, or other tracking methods, we'll look at those too.
We Love Data (Without the Overwhelm)
I'm a big believer that good information leads to better decisions.
If you've already had blood tests, ultrasounds, hormone testing, semen analysis, or you've seen a fertility specialist, we'll take the time to review everything together. There's no need to start from scratch.
We'll also look at any supplements you're taking. Many people arrive with a cupboard full of vitamins they've collected over months (or years!). Together we'll work through what's evidence based, what's appropriate for you, and whether anything is unnecessary or duplicated.
It's About Understanding Your Story
When we put all of this information together, we can start asking helpful questions.
Are you ovulating regularly?
Does the timing of ovulation match what you're expecting?
Are there symptoms that suggest it's worth having further investigations with your GP or fertility specialist?
Are there lifestyle factors that could be supporting—or perhaps getting in the way of—your fertility journey?
Every person is different, so your care should be too.
So Where Does Chinese Medicine Fit In?
Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't see infertility as a single condition with a one size fits all solution. Instead, we look for patterns in your overall health. That might include irregular or painful periods, endometriosis related symptoms, digestive health, sleep, stress levels, circulation, energy, or other signs that help us understand how your body is functioning as a whole.
Treatment may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine (where appropriate), nutritional guidance, and lifestyle support, all tailored to your individual situation.
The aim isn't to promise pregnancy or claim to "fix" fertility. The goal is to support your overall health, help you feel your best, and complement the care you're already receiving from your fertility specialist.
You're Not Just a Set of Test Results
Trying to conceive can be exciting, exhausting, hopeful, frustrating—and sometimes all of those things in the same week.
Many of my patients tell me that simply having someone who takes the time to listen, explain their cycle, answer questions, and support them throughout the process makes a real difference.
Acupuncture is also something many patients find deeply relaxing, helping them feel calmer during what can be an emotionally demanding time.
Whether you're just starting your fertility journey or you've been on the path for a while, my goal is to help you better understand your body and provide thoughtful, individualised care every step of the way.
Why do many fertility clinics offer acupuncture?
There are a few reasons:
It helps many patients feel calmer and more supported.
It may improve quality of life during what can be an emotionally demanding process.
It may help with pain sensations associated
It helps with stress and anxiety
From a Chinese medicine perspective
Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't diagnose infertility as a single condition. Instead, practitioners look for patterns such as:
irregular or absent ovulation
painful periods
endometriosis-related symptoms
stress
digestive health
sleep
circulation
overall health.
Treatment aims to support the person's overall health rather than directly "making someone fertile."
And in this way the practice of acupuncture can certainly be very helpful in fertility
